Richard Evans

Dr. Evans is a 20 year industry veteran and leads the Healthcare practice at SSR.  As a senior executive in the pharmaceuticals industry, Dr. Evans responsibilities ranged from corporate strategy to the pricing and distribution of the company’s products.  His variety of assignments provided a comparable variety of vantage points on the industry.  As an analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein, he was ranked #1 by both Bloomberg and Institutional Investor for his U.S. pharmaceuticals coverage – across all industries and coverage he was ranked one of the top 20 analysts worldwide.  Dr. Evans is the author of “Health and Capital” published in August of 2009.  He is a co-founder of Sector & Sovereign Research, LLC.


Scott Hinds

Mr. Hinds leads the Economics/Demographics practice at SSR.  He is an experienced economist, having received his M.S. from the University of North Carolina, where he taught Microeconomics to both graduate and undergraduate students.  His degree includes a concentration in Microeconomic Theory and extensive experience in complex econometric techniques.  Mr. Hinds’ graduate research focused on information asymmetries and the game theoretical foundations of herd behavior.  His work has been published in Nature Reviews Drug Discovery and the Handbook of Public Finance.  Mr. Hinds has also worked in investment banking with Lehman Brothers and as a strategic consultant with AVOS Life Sciences.   As an equity capital markets financial analyst, Mr. Hinds worked on numerous IPOs, convertible and PIPE offerings for a range of healthcare, biotechnology and industrial companies.  More recently he worked as a strategic consultant specializing in large scale quantitative engagements for a number of pharmaceutical clients.

Ryan Baum

Mr. Baum is an analyst in the Healthcare practice. Prior to this, he was a management strategy consultant to biopharmaceutical firms at IMS Consulting Group. Mr. Baum earned his BA in Economics, Public Policy Studies, and Philosophy from Duke University, and is a CFA charterholder.

Industrials / Basic Materials

Graham Copley

Mr. Copley joined SSR as a Senior Partner in January 2012. He is a chemical engineer by education and has spent roughly half of his career in the chemical industry and half in investment research and equity management. Most recently Mr. Copley was Head of US Equities for Macquarie Securities Group, a Board director of Macquarie Securities USA (the broker dealer) for 3 years, and a member of the US management committee of Macquarie. Prior to Macquarie, Mr. Copley held the role of Global Head of Equity Research for HSBC. In addition to management roles in the equity business, he was a research analyst at Sanford C Bernstein & Co. LLC from 1996 to 2004, covering the chemical industry, where he was consistently ranked within the top three analysts in the sector.

Nick Lipinski

Mr. Lipinski is a graduate of the Stern School of Business at NYU where he completed his degree in Economics in 3 years, graduating summa cum laude and receiving the Award for Academic Excellence in Economics.  Mr. Lipinski worked as a proprietary trader on Wall Street for a year before joining SSR in April 2012 as an associate in the Industrials / Basic Materials sector.

Tech / Media / Telecom

Paul Sagawa

Mr. Sagawa leads the Technology, Media and Telecom practices at SSR.  He has worked in and around the industries for over 20 years, including his 11 year tenure as a senior research analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein.  While at Bernstein, he was named to the Institutional Investor All-Star Team in three different categories, including the number one position in wire-line communications equipment after his prescient call in September 2000 noted that cash strapped telecom carriers would be unable to pay for technology purchase commitments and correctly predicted the subsequent collapse in the sector.  In his most recent position at Bernstein, Paul conceived and launched a new business area as the firm’s first Small Cap Equity Strategist.

Prior to Bernstein, Paul spent six and half years at McKinsey and Company, rising to the position of technology sector specialist in recognition of his communications industry acumen.  His earlier experience includes three years as a sales representative for AT&T’s equipment business.  Paul earned his AB in Economics and MBA from Harvard University.

Artur Pylak

Mr. Pylak is an experienced technology, media, and telecommunications analyst having consulting experience advising high profile corporate and private equity clients across the US, Europe, and Asia. His experiences span several TMT subsectors. Prior to joining SSR, Artur was with Digitas/Publicis Modem and L.E.K. Consulting. His consulting experiences include developing business plans for start-up cable channels, due diligence /valuation of media companies, anti-piracy strategy, market sizing of new media innovations, and analyzing the ROI of cross-channel marketing campaigns for a major cable/telecommunications provider.  Artur earned his MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.  He also received his Master of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and his BA magna cum laude with distinction in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania.

Utilities / Renewable Energy

Hugh Wynne

Prior to joining SSR, Hugh Wynne was Managing Director and Senior Research Analyst at Bernstein Research, where he was responsible for the regulated utility, independent power and renewable energy sectors.  In that role, he was ranked nine times by Institutional Investor in its annual All-American Research Team poll.  Hugh’s power sector research has focused on the key long term trends driving structural change in the industry, including slowing load growth and its impact on industry revenues; increasingly stringent environmental regulations and their impact on the coal and oil fired fleets; rapid growth of utility scale renewable generation and widening consumer uptake of distributed solar; and the challenges renewable generation presents both to competitive power markets and the traditional utility business model. Before joining Bernstein, Hugh was Vice President of Finance at ABB Energy Ventures, the power project development subsidiary of ABB Asea Brown Boveri, where he was charged with making equity investments in and arranging non-recourse financing for major power generation and transmission projects globally.  At ABB, Hugh participated in the privatization and 750 MW expansion of the TermoBarranquilla gas-fired power plant in Colombia, the construction of two 500 MW combined cycle gas turbine plants in Monterrey and Rosarito, Mexico, the construction of a 275 MW integrated gasification combined cycle power plant in Ancona, Italy, the privatization and 700 MW expansion of the Jorf Lasfar coal-fired power station in Morocco and the privatization of the South Australian transmission grid. Previously, Hugh was a Senior Vice President at Lehman Brothers’ Utilities and Project Finance Group. Hugh holds a B.A. degree from Harvard University, where he graduated magna cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and a M.A. degree in Economics from Stanford University.

Eric Selmon

Prior to joining SSR, Eric Selmon was a senior member of the research and portfolio management team at Longbow Capital Partners, a utility/energy-infrastructure focused hedge fund. During this time he also consulted for a number of asset managers and corporate entities in the cleantech, utility, power and energy industries, including successfully arranging financing for several MW of rooftop solar projects, advising a utility-scale energy storage company, overseeing a power plant optimization software company and raising capital for a number of cleantech startups. Previously Eric worked at Bernstein Research covering electric utilities alongside Hugh Wynne and at Lehman Brothers in energy sector research. Eric holds a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School, and B.S. in Earth Systems and M.S in Engineering degrees from Stanford University.
